Meet Our Staff

Betty Miklavcic, Activity Director

Betty is a graduate of the Recreation and Leisure Services Diploma Program from Mohawk College.  She has a wide variety of experience in the Long Term Care industry, from St. Peter's Hospital through other nursing and retirement homes, to her career at the Durand.

"Being a part of the Durand Residence for over 10 years now has given me the opportunity to experience many new things and helped me to develop meaningful friendships with both residents and their familes.  And, I've enjoyed watching the Durand Residence change and evolve into the wonderful home it is today."

"Please come and join us for our regularly scheduled programs such as cards, bingo, hand therapy, exercise classes and many more, and you'll love to come along on our exciting monthly trips...they're always memorable and fun."

We hope you'll join us!

Karen Zahoruk, Chef

Chef Karen Zahoruk, our Dietary Manager, was formally trained as a Chef and Kitchen Manager at the Canadian Institute of Food and Wine at Niagara College.  Her Chef Mentors and Instructors have included Chef Mark Picone, Chef Michael Olsen, Chef James Olberg of Vintage Hotels, and Anna Olsen of Sugar.

Chef Karen endeavours to present a varied and appetizing menu featuring wholesome and fresh ingredients whenever possible.  Her background features time preparing meals ranging from lounge fare to fine dining. Although she prefers to prepare classic French style dishes, she is just as comfortable with international flavours and modern presentations.

As a competitive baker, Chef Karen also developed her skills as a pastry chef. Chef Karen and all the Dietary staff are always happy to fill tummies and solicit smiles of Durand residents at every meal. Bon appétit!
